Pivotal Study Links Mercury to Autism

Excerpt from Mothering Magazine March/April 2009.

Landmark research published in the October 2008 issue of the peer-reviewed Indian Journal of Medical Research confirms a causal link between subacute Mercury poisoning in children and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis.

"A comprehensive Review of Mercury Provoked Autism" by Dr. D.A. Geir et al., reviewed the findings of more than 150 studies. Published in a special issue devoted to metal toxicity, the study demonstrates that a combination of susceptibility (inability to excrete mercury) and exposure at critical fetal and/or early childhood dvelopmental periods may result in some forms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Low-level mercury exposure causes immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to those associated with ASDs. in the US, mercury (Hg) accumulates in human tissues primarily through the consumption of fish. But merury is also found in many pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including toothpastes, contact-lens solutions, vaccines, contraceptives, and dental fillings.

While the study acknowledges that not al ASDs are caused by mercury, and not all high mercury levels result in ASDs, the preponderance of evidence suggests "medicinal, dental and environmental Hg exposures are capable of causing the set of symptoms commonly used to diagnose autism".
