So, Dr. Paul Offit has come out with a new book called "Autism's False Prophets".
Part of his foreword: "Children with autism have been placed on stringent diets, subjected to high-temperature saunas, bathed in magnetic clay, asked to swallow digestive enzymes and activated charcoal, and injected with various combinations of vitamins, minerals, and acids. Instead of helping, these therapies can hurt those who are most vulnerable, and particularly in the case of autism, they undermine childhood vaccination programs that have saved millions of lives. An overwhelming body of scientific evidence clearly shows that childhood vaccines are safe and does not cause autism. Yet widespread fear of vaccines on the part of parents persists.
The people he is referring to are the very doctors who are helping children like mine heal from Autism. Well, if Dr. Offitt were merely a medical voice of dissent with genuine intentions, just doing his best to help kids, I would say, "well, he has a right to his opinion" and let it go. The truth is, Dr. Offitt has a different motivation altogether with this book.
Dr. Offitt is the current owner Rotavirus Vaccine (Rotateq) Patent. The rotavirus vaccines have had a really rough history. The first vaccine was pulled a few years ago b/c Merck admitted that the vaccine caused the bowel obstruction. Article here. Unfortunately, that trend continues with Dr. Offitt's new vaccine. Also important to note: ... about 20 deaths occur each year in the U.S.A due to rotavirus diarrhea among children younger than 5 years. But according to this LONG but informative article, rotavirus can be expensive for our society--so we should run out and vaccinate our children...right. Get the needle!
Any any rate, it is pretty clear that this vaccine is questionable on it's best day. It is also one that parents are likely to forgo if they are selectively vaccinating, b/c while yucky and inconvenient, most people aren't deathly afraid of diarrhea and vomiting like they are of polio. The Journal of Pediatrics from February 2004 (Volume 144 Issue 2) article, Safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity of a live, quadrivalent human-bovine reassortant rotavirus vaccine in healthy infants, (4) served up more than I’d expected. Down at the very bottom of the page I found:
Drs H. Fred Clark, David I. Bernstein, Penelope H. Dennehy, Paul Offit, Michael Pichichero, John Treanor, and Richard L. Ward received funding for research or for clinical investigation from Merck & Co, Inc. Drs Clark and Offit are coholders of the patent on the human reassortant rotavirus vaccine. Dr Dennehy also is a member of Merck’s Speakers Bureau. Drs David L. Krah, Alan Shaw, Michael J. Dallas, Karen M. Kaplan, and Penny Heaton are current employees and Drs Joseph J. Eiden and Nathalie Ivanoff are former employees of Merck & Co, Inc.
What’s so important about this name? Dr. Paul Offit was a member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices. This means his job was to recommend or reject vaccines for use in the routine immunization program. I understand Dr. Offit stood down from the official vote on this vaccine, however, here we see an example of him holding a patent for RotaTeq, participating in the study (paid for by Merck) demonstrating that RotaTeq is safe and it works AND amazingly it is recommended for use through the CDC. Conflict of interest?
So, Dr. Offitt was paid by Merck to invesitgate the safety of a vaccine he owns the patent to. Not surprisingly, he and his colleagues (one a co-owner of the patent; others also paid by Merck) found the vaccine completely safe. SHOCK!
Just as we all know, Tobacco companies for decades insisted that smoking was a perfectly safe and healthy past-time. On April 14, 1994 seven executives of major tobacco companies testified that they did not believe that tobacco use was addictive, even though they had tests that indicated otherwise dating all the way back to 1970. They dodged the bullet financially until 2006, when the companies accused paid the largest civil settlement in U.S. history $368.5 Billion, for 'an alleged cover-up of tobacco-related health problems'. Vaccines are next for this. The Hannah Poling case was one of millions. (Dr. Offitt condemned the settlement for Poling, again a shocker!) The clock is ticking on Big Pharma. Truth is a stubborn gal. She kicks and fights, and digs and persists until she is out. The truth will come out about Vaccines and people like Dr. Offitt will be exposed for the greedy and selfish people they truly are. SHAMEFUL!
